Sometimes potential customers come to us with very unusual requests. This guy in Hendon was in partnership with his mate and the company got into difficulty resulting in it going into administration. The business had a well established 0800 number that was published nationwide the yellow pages and would be there until the next new issue which was in 12 months approximately.
He was dangling the carrot of an order for a Samsung phone system if we could transfer the 0800 number on to our telecoms traffic carrier. He omitted to tell us that there was an outstanding bill due to the provider he had been using. To obtain the number the bill would have to be paid and the administrator would have to give his permission for the transfer. We approached the administrator of the failed business who requested a substantial payment before he would give the necessary permission. We did not believe that the number was worth the value on the administrator’s fee and told him so.
He proceeded to pay all the fees and bill thinking he would be the beneficiary of the call volume that came through the number and hence getting the goodwill free!
It was a miscalculation on his part his company went bust last month.

We received an enquiry from Eltham just recently about the supply and install of a new phone system. The caller told us the make , model number and configuration he required and asked us to quote. It was a relatively small phone system . We asked if his premises was cabled up just ready for a cut-over into existing and it wasn’t. He had 3 quoted already ranging from £650 to £1000. None of the companies who quoted had looked at his premises. I think he said he found them all on E-Bay.
It was clear from the conversation that he was going to base his decision on the lowest price. It was also clear that the those who had quoted had a well rehearsed quoting method that gave the impression of being reasonable but with scope to charge “ extra”. It sounded like he was setting himself up for a rip-off.
We declined to quote.

We are frequently surprised at our trade competitors trying to force their customers to replace their phone system the end of the lease period. There is nothing illegal about what they do. What happens is that at the end of the lease the title is usually transferred to the supplier for a fee paid to the finance company. Once they own title to the system they can remove it or continue to charge the customer a rental. What surprises us is that some well known names are at this caper – we expect more integrity from well know trade names!! Smartinfo’s policy is to offer the title to the customer at the end of the lease. We usually put this commitment in writing at the commencement of the lease and we advise all users of lease finance to get a similar commitment in writing when the contract is being signed.
The prospect in Camberwell was given notice by their previous supplier that they were coming to remove the system at the lease expiry date. They contacted us got a quote and we had the new system in place by the expiry date.

A very sarky email arrived today from a customer today asking why he could not make any international calls and he wanted to know why. He stated that he had to make many calls internationally and the tone of his email was aggressively rude. At Easter as a precaution against fraudster hacking and stealing traffic we placed international call bar on many accounts to protect from this abuse. We responded and explained what we had done and why. In addition we told him that we had made a decision to leave the bar in place until requested by a customer to remove it. Considering he had not made any international calls since 6-Apr-2012 we were not impressed by his exaggerated claims.
We are always stressing to customers the need to providing us with accurate information concerning a problem and not an exaggerated rant.
Most customers are grateful for any assistance we give them when they need a problem solved.
They do say that you can’t please everyone!
